Josh Young sworn in and chosen as Macon County commission chair; Barry Breeden also sworn

At the Dec. 20, 2024 meeting of the Macon County Board of Commissioners, Josh Young and Barry Breeden were sworn in as county commissioners, and the board unanimously elected Young its chairman for the coming year.

The swearing-in took place during the public meeting. Interim County Manager Warren Cave outlined the role of the chair, saying the position is “known as the chief executive officer of our county,” responsible for setting and understanding agendas, presiding over meetings and overseeing board tasks. Cave urged the incoming chair to use the role to keep meetings efficient and orderly.

Commissioner Antoine nominated Young for chair; Commissioner Shields seconded the motion. The board voted unanimously to elect Young. After the vote, Young thanked his colleagues, saying, “I just want to say thank you for the trust, gentlemen,” and signaled priorities on improving efficiency and service to residents.

Young nominated Commissioner Shields as vice chair; Shields was elected unanimously. The board held the two votes on the record during the same meeting in which the new commissioners took their oaths.

Earlier in the meeting commissioners recognized Commissioner Higdon for 12 years of service, with several members praising his leadership and mentorship. Higdon declined extended remarks when invited to speak.

The new leadership said they will aim to shorten lengthy meetings and ensure agendas are prepared so staff and the public can participate without late-night sessions. Young said a primary focus will be “a high level of service provided to our citizens.”

The meeting also included routine items and other votes recorded separately.
