Commissioners approve Wake Forest Health Sciences site-plan amendment for Clarkson biomedical campus

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 5 unanimously approved zoning map amendment F1650, a site-plan amendment affecting roughly 6.72 acres on Welfare Road that will allow an expansion of Wake Forest University Health Sciences’ Clarkson biomedical research campus.
Chris Murphy, director of Planning and Development Services, briefed the board that the parcel is within Growth Management Area 4 and straddles the Forsyth–Davidson county line; the portion in Davidson County had already completed its approval process. Murphy described the request as an internally oriented expansion of a previously established high-tech biomedical research facility and said the proposal is consistent with Legacy 2030 and the Southwest Suburban Area Plan Update. The Planning Board previously voted unanimously to recommend approval.
Mark Isaacson, an attorney for Wake Health, told the board the campus has been in Wake Forest’s holdings for decades and that the requested improvements would house biomedical research relocated from other facilities. Isaacson said the project is intended to accommodate about the same number of employees on site (about 27) and that the North Carolina Department of Transportation will study a nearby curve at the request of Wake Health.
Following the public hearing and discussion, the board approved the motion to adopt F1650 and a statement of consistency with the comprehensive plan. Commissioners voted unanimously; no roll-call tallies were recorded in the transcript.
Murphy said county staff will reconcile Forsyth and Davidson County plans so that building permits and inspections proceed under Forsyth County’s processes for the portions of the project that lie in Forsyth jurisdiction.
