Interlaken staff to create town .gov email addresses; council discusses use by office and commissions

Town staff told the Interlaken Town Council on Feb. 4 that state guidance requires use of a top-level .gov domain and that the town had selected .gov as the appropriate option. Staff said the deadline cited in the presentation is July 1, 2025, and recommended buying a domain and setting up role-based email addresses rather than using personal email addresses on the town website.
Staff proposed role-based addresses such as mayor@interlakenut.gov, treasurer@interlakenut.gov, publicworks@interlakenut.gov and water@interlakenut.gov. The presenter said an account tier with roughly $1.99 per month would provide 50 GB of storage and be adequate for town needs. Councilors favored removing personal addresses from the website and placing a shared council@interlakenut.gov account (with access for multiple councilors) on the site, while individual members could continue to receive direct emails at their personal addresses if they choose.
Councilors discussed management and access: staff said the role-based accounts could be configured to appear inside individual Outlook inboxes as a separate folder. The planning commission representative (Matt) said he would consult with Diana on the planning commission’s preferences; councilors discussed a planning-commission account (planningcommission@interlakenut.gov or pc@interlakenut.gov) to centralize commission correspondence.
Councilors directed staff to proceed with setup and to coordinate with commission leadership and individual councilors to remove personal addresses from the public website where appropriate.
