The Kossuth County Board of Supervisors discussed scheduling full-board interviews for the county planning and zoning, sanitary and weed commissioner position and indicated the board will coordinate schedules to hold joint interviews.
A staff update said two interviews have been conducted so far and that "it appears for a couple of reasons, we'll probably need to have the whole board involved in interviews for that so we can make a decision," the chair said. The board discussed the option for an applicant to request a closed session; staff said such a request would be honored and that hiring evaluations can fall under the listed closed-session authority for evaluating professional competency.
One supervisor publicly disclosed a personal connection to an applicant and said they will recuse themselves from any discussion or decisions related to the position. "I'm gonna abstain from any discussion or decisions relating to that position since I'm related to 1 of the applicants," the supervisor said. The board agreed it will communicate with applicants about whether interviews will be open or conducted in closed session if requested.
No formal hiring decision was made at the meeting; staff will coordinate availability among supervisors to schedule interviews in the new calendar year and will notify applicants about closed-session options if requested.
