The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors denied a rezoning request for the Camelback Crossing Shopping Center, rejecting a developer’s application to change the property’s zoning to C‑2 and directing that the site remain under the existing planned shopping-center (C‑S) designation.
Supervisor action came after neighborhood opposition and a packet of letters including input from the mayor of Litchfield Park. The moving supervisor said “there’s quite a bit of opposition to this particular zoning change,” and argued that the existing C‑S district “is more appropriate for this site and the neighborhood than the requested C‑2.”
The applicant, represented by Larry Lazarus, told the board there was substantial community support for the project and offered a willingness to add an eight‑foot wall on the north side of the site to address neighbor concerns. Supervisors proceeded to vote without taking a presentation, saying the opposition and prior outreach supported denial.
A motion to deny carried unanimously; the board recorded the action and closed the matter. Planning staff will note the denial in the record and the property remains subject to the currently adopted C‑S standards for future proposals.
