Forsyth County authorizes demolition of uninhabitable structure at 6011 Woodmont Court

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 30 authorized county staff to begin the procurement process to demolish a structure at 6011 Woodmont Court after concluding the property is unfit for human habitation.
Staff said the owner purchased the property in its present, fire-damaged condition and that county notices to the recorded owner have been sent since 2021. A title search and subsequent outreach located a business contact tied to the owner; staff said the owner told county investigators he could complete demolition within 90 days if he undertook the work.
County staff recommended the board approve a resolution giving authority to proceed with demolition, with the explicit understanding staff will work in good faith with the owner and will not expend county funds if the owner completes demolition within an agreed 90-day window. If the county must proceed, staff will follow the county procurement process to secure a demolition contractor and then issue a notice to proceed.
Commissioners emphasized the prolonged neighborhood impacts of derelict structures and asked staff to pursue the cases on a quarterly basis for other unfit properties. The board voted unanimously to authorize the demolition resolution.
Staff said the county currently has about 15 properties identified as unfit for human habitation; a smaller subset has been designated dilapidated (repairs would exceed 60% of property value). The county will continue title searches and outreach as it advances quarterly demolition actions for the most egregious cases.
