Kearney honors three police officers with lifesaving awards

The Kearney City Council recognized three Kearney Police Department officers with lifesaving awards during its Jan. 28, 2025, meeting for their response to a medical emergency on May 13, 2024.
Police Chief Wong said officers Derek Kosick, Dave Humphrey and CJ Hughes were dispatched to Family Fresh Market after an adult male collapsed and was not breathing. "Officer Kosick began providing CPR," Wong said, and Humphrey and Hughes arrived to assist paramedics. The officers regained a pulse and the man began breathing on his own while being transported to CHI Good Samaritan Hospital; the council was told the patient is in his 50s and survived the incident.
The officers were nominated by Sergeant Brad Knowles, who was present at the meeting, and each received a Kearney Police Department lifesaving award certificate and an authorized ribbon to wear on their uniform. Chief Wong said the award recognizes the "proper application of training and experience" and singled out the combined efforts of officers and emergency personnel.
Council members applauded the officers. The presentation noted Officer Hughes already wore a lifesaving ribbon and that the department has presented multiple lifesaving awards in recent years. The council did not take any formal action beyond the recognition.
The awards ceremony followed remarks by council leaders and was recorded on the meeting agenda.
