The board heard three student‑focused updates celebrating recognition and inclusion work in district schools.
McEwen Elementary’s “goal wall” program lets individual students or entire classes set personal goals and sign the wall with their name and date when they achieve them. Staff described both academic and nonacademic goals — examples included a student learning to ride a bicycle with donated equipment and another achieving five days of on‑time attendance. Staff said many students have signed the wall multiple times; an approximate count given during the meeting was “50–75” signatures, and administrators said they will continue the program and add additional wall space once the current section fills.
HMS (Harrisonville Middle School) held an inclusion and respect/kindness day run jointly by student council and life‑skills students, modeled after Special Olympics‑style activities. Students participated in relays and signed a banner taking a kindness challenge, and participants received bracelets. School staff said the event reduced initial student resistance and produced positive feedback from teachers.
At Harrisonville High School the administration described a new monthly advisory assembly during which students select student‑of‑the‑month, teacher‑of‑the‑month and staff‑of‑the‑month recognitions, and student groups showcase programs such as theater, musical performances and applied math projects (including raised garden beds). Administrators said the assemblies are student‑run, aim to broaden recognition beyond athletic highlights, and are intended to strengthen community and school climate.
Board members received the presentations and praised the programs; the district said it will continue to support and expand the initiatives.
