UN allocates $17 million from CERF for eastern DRC displacements; names new Libya representative

The United Nations emergency relief coordinator, Tom Fletcher, allocated $17,000,000 from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for urgent response to new displacements in North and South Kivu provinces in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The funding is intended to support emergency assistance including food aid, restoration of water, sanitation and hygiene services, health services and emergency medical care for injured people, and temporary shelter.
Secretary-General António Guterres expressed condolences to the families of fallen peacekeepers and to the governments and people of South Africa and Uruguay in connection with recent fatalities in the DRC. The CERF allocation is intended to help vulnerable people and communities facing displacement since the beginning of January.
In related personnel news, Guterres appointed Hannah Tetteh of Ghana as his new special representative for Libya and head of the UN political mission there. The appointment replaces Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who served in that post until May of last year; the secretary-general thanked Bathily for his leadership and acknowledged the deputy who served in an interim capacity.
The UN said the CERF funding and leadership change form part of ongoing UN efforts to respond to acute humanitarian needs in eastern DRC and to maintain high-level political engagement in Libya.
