Fort Smith board approves inspection and cash purchase plan for 623 Garrison Avenue

The Board of Directors voted unanimously to accept a building inspection report and to appropriate funds for the cash purchase of 623 Garrison Avenue for continued municipal administrative use.
City staff told the board the structure — built in the 1970s, according to materials — presented no surprises beyond known items, and that mold remediation and exterior weatherization were underway. Staff said current owners are expected to finish those repairs before closing.
Director Kemp asked whether future renovations would require the addition of a fire-suppression system. City staff responded that code triggers for installing fire suppression depend on the scope and value of future renovations compared with the building’s overall value; smaller renovations would not necessarily require a sprinkler system. The building currently relies on portable extinguishers and manual suppression measures, staff said.
The board voted 6-0 to adopt the resolution and ordinance (items 2A and 2B) together. No members of the public signed up to speak on the item.
The action funds the purchase from unobligated general-fund balance as previously directed by the board.
