UN warns drone strikes on Sudan power and water infrastructure endanger civilians and health services

UN humanitarian briefers said a series of reported drone attacks in Sudan have struck civilian power and water infrastructure, disrupting electricity and water supplies and putting civilians and health services at risk.
The briefing cited a reported attack on the Umdabakar power station around Khosti south of Khartoum, an earlier strike on a power station in Northern State that disrupted electricity and water supplies to Dongola and surrounding areas, and damage to the Gerba hydroelectric facility in Kassala state on Jan. 18 that cut power to hospitals and health facilities. A reported strike on the Meroe dam last week also severely disrupted water and electricity supplies to Khartoum and surrounding states, the UN said.
OCHA warned that major cuts to water and power threaten people’s access to critical health services and safe water, and reiterated that under international humanitarian law parties must not attack objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population and must take feasible precautions to minimize civilian harm.
