UN peacekeepers report M23 gains in eastern DRC and mass displacements exceeding 250,000

UN peacekeeping briefers reported a deteriorating security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the M23 armed group continuing to occupy new territory in North Kivu and capturing a strategic hub along the supply route to Goma.
The mission said heavy clashes have persisted between M23, the Congolese Armed Forces and other armed groups near Sake, and fighting in Buremana claimed at least 10 lives, prompting displacement toward Kalehei in South Kivu, Goma and Rusayo. Since Saturday, M23 reportedly captured other localities in South Kivu, resulting in casualties and the displacement of more than 250,000 people.
The briefers urged parties to commit to the Luanda process and called on the M23 to lay down weapons and honor the ceasefire in place since Aug. 4. The mission expressed deep concern over the humanitarian consequences and the threat to sites for internally displaced people.
