La Habra council directs staff to recruit for planning and community services commission vacancies

The La Habra City Council on Jan. 21 directed city staff to advertise vacancies and schedule interviews for an unscheduled seat on the Planning Commission and two scheduled openings on the Community Services Commission, voting unanimously to move forward with recruitment.
City staff told the council that the unscheduled Planning Commission vacancy was created by the resignation of Minerva Gomez and that an appointee would serve the remainder of the term ending March 31, 2027. Staff said there are two scheduled vacancies on the Community Services Commission because the terms of Gabriela Garcia and Denise Schmidt expire March 31, 2025; Garcia submitted a resignation effective March 31, 2025, and Schmidt is eligible for reappointment.
The council approved a recruitment timeline presented by staff: applications will be accepted through 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20; interviews would be tentatively held Monday, March 3, and Monday, March 17, as needed; and commission appointments are scheduled to be considered at the council's April 7 regular meeting. Council members made the motion to advertise and schedule interviews and the motion passed unanimously.
Earlier in the meeting the council approved the consent calendar by a unanimous vote. The public comment period produced no speakers on items not on the agenda, and the council proceeded to the consideration agenda for the recruitment item.
The vacancies affect local advisory bodies that provide recommendations to the city on planning and community services matters. The Planning Commission seat will be filled only for the remaining two years of the current term, and Community Services Commission appointments will reflect the scheduled three-year term structure described by staff.
Council members also used the meeting for ceremonial remarks — including recognition of the city's centennial — and to offer condolences after a recent traffic fatality involving a La Habra High School student, mentioned in council remarks. No formal action related to those remarks was taken during the meeting.
