The Lynnwood City Council on Jan. 21 debated how to improve reporting from council liaisons to boards and commissions and how council members should engage the public at community events.
Council President Coelho opened discussion saying some council members felt the current liaison reporting process does not consistently surface information from boards and commissions. Members floated a plan to reserve time on the council’s third meeting of the month for short (roughly five‑minute) verbal reports from council liaisons and to invite board chairs to attend when they have material to share.
Council member Bridal proposed adding a short monthly agenda item on the council’s third meeting so members can report out what has occurred in boards and commissions. Council member Hirsch and others said shorter, more frequent in‑person opportunities were preferable to a single quarterly report, and several members suggested rotating brief updates so no single meeting becomes lengthy.
On civic outreach, members discussed moving some engagement away from council chambers to higher‑traffic or less intimidating locations: the Lynnwood mall, senior center, neighborhood parks and community events such as Meet Me in the Park and the Fair on 44th. Members recommended a visible, staffed table with chairs so council members could have one‑on‑one conversations rather than a formal, microphone‑driven forum; others suggested coordinating with community organizations and better event marketing to increase attendance.
The council reached a tentative consensus to try a short monthly report slot on the third Wednesday and asked staff to notify boards and invite chairs to attend as needed. No formal vote was taken during the work session; staff will include the proposal in future agenda planning.
