Grand Prairie marks MLK Day with parade ending at David Daniels Elementary Academy

A brisk, sun-drenched Saturday morning on the third weekend of January drew hundreds of men, women and children from across Grand Prairie to the city’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade and celebration, an event organizer said.
The procession started downtown at City Hall, proceeded west on Main Street, followed MLK Junior Boulevard and continued into the Dalworth neighborhood before concluding at David Daniels Elementary Academy, where a program was held for participants and spectators.
The narrator said the parade featured several city and state officials as well as students, teachers and parents from elementary, middle and high schools in the Grand Prairie Independent School District. The event was described as a community celebration to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights leader whose birthday is observed nationally on Jan. 15 and as a federal holiday on the third Monday in January.
Organizers and participants emphasized the parade’s role as both commemoration and community service, drawing representatives of local schools and civic groups. The parade route included historically significant areas of the city and finished at an elementary school to allow students to take part in the program inside.
The event’s timing fell on the weekend before the federal observance this year, when the national MLK Day falls on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025.
