County insurance agent flags asset valuation, space-heater hazards and leased-site pollution exposure

John Getty, the county's insurance agent, presented the quarterly risk and asset update to the Kootenai County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 21.
Getty said a walkthrough of the administration complex revealed roughly $2 million in IT equipment in a vault while the building’s personal property schedule listed only $6 million total for the administration building. He asked staff to collect more detailed scheduled-asset values, suggesting the county calculate an average value per cubicle and have departments report counts so the county can set a more precise baseline for coverage.
“There were a number of safety concerns,” Getty said, giving the example of a space heater with a cord crossing a threshold and recommending that “all the space heaters should be turned off and unplugged when they're not in use.” Commissioners asked whether a countywide communication would be sufficient; Getty agreed that a notice about space-heater and extension-cord safety was appropriate.
Getty also asked staff to review the insurance specifications in the county’s lease with Cooney Fire at the fairgrounds because of pollution-hazard potential from chemicals used by the fire department. He raised a separate pollution-exposure concern tied to an underground fuel tank at a county site identified in the meeting as “Coogee North,” noting the county’s insurer pool (ICRMP) limits pollution exposure for that line at $100,000 and that he was still awaiting supplier-provided values for the tank and pump equipment.
Getty closed by offering to answer questions; commissioners did not take formal action during the meeting but agreed to release countywide guidance on space-heater safety and to follow up on asset-scheduling and lease insurance checks.
