Committee forwards Greg Yamada nomination to full council for police commission seat

Micah Alameda, executive assistant to the mayor, introduced Mr. Yamada as the administration's nominee to fill the police commission seat for District 3, noting the seat was left vacant by Travis Ng and that, if confirmed, the term would run through Dec. 31, 2027. Alameda said Yamada is a longtime island resident and former Hawaii Police Department officer who later worked in security and currently works at Hilo International Airport.
The nomination drew supportive remarks from several council members. Councilmember Onishi said having commissioners with law-enforcement experience helps the commission’s deliberations, adding, “I totally support it, Greg.” Councilmember Kerkwitz said Yamada’s lifelong service to the island community made her support likely, and Councilmember Galimba noted Yamada’s experience with the Hawaii Island Humane Society and the practical challenges of policing large rural areas.
Greg Yamada introduced himself at the committee, describing his motivation for volunteering and his belief in accountability and due process. “I believe in accountability and I believe that officers need to be held accountable when applicable, but I also think that they should be treated fairly,” Yamada said.
After discussion, Councilmember Kimball moved to close the file on Communication 89 and forward the nomination to the full council with a favorable recommendation; Councilmember Galimba seconded. The clerk recorded the vote as eight ayes; one councilmember was excused. The committee did not place any requirement that Yamada attend the subsequent full-council confirmation; staff clarified attendance is voluntary and not required by the committee.
The committee’s action sends the nomination to the full council for final confirmation.
