Senate committee forwards Steve Lund for Utah State Fair Park board

The Senate Political Subdivisions Confirmation Committee on Jan. 13 voted to favorably recommend Steve Lund to the full Senate for appointment to the Utah State Fair Park Corporation board of directors.

Committee staff member Nathan Brady explained that 2024 legislation created a larger Utah Fair Park Area Investment and Restoration District while the State Fair Park Corporation (now the State Fair Park authority) continues to oversee the State Fair Park grounds and the annual state fair. "The authority assumed all obligations, rights, privileges, immunities and assets of the Fair Corporation," Brady said, distinguishing the State Fair Park board from the larger district created by House Bill 562 (2024), which enables tax-increment financing and bond issuance for development of the wider area.

Nominee Steve Lund described a lifetime of agricultural experience and his interest in the board's mission. "Agriculture is one of those industries that is foundational not only to the state of Utah, but to the strength and security of the nation itself," Lund said. He told the committee he supports both honoring the fair's agricultural history and pursuing forward-looking opportunities, and said he is prepared to meet the board's time commitments, including additional work around the state fair.

Committee members asked Lund about availability and how the State Fair Park board will interact with the new district authority. Senator Muslin asked whether time commitments would be larger than the board's usual monthly meetings; Lund said he was willing to make the necessary time commitment. Senator Vickers asked about coordination with the district board; Lund said he was "still working through that" but expected collaboration. Senator Bridal, who also serves on the district board, said a working group is developing a master plan involving the Larry Miller properties, state sovereign lands and the State Fair Park authority and that planning and bonding details are underway.

Senator Blum noted a preference that appointments cast a wide net beyond former legislators, and Senator Thatcher encouraged more public recruitment for boards and commissions, pointing listeners to the state's board application website. There were no public comments on the nomination during the meeting.

Senator Bridal moved to favorably recommend Lund's nomination to the full Senate. The committee chair called the question and members voted in favor; the transcript records the committee's vote as unanimous and the nomination was forwarded to the full Senate for confirmation. The transcript does not record individual roll-call tallies.

The nomination will next proceed to the full Senate for confirmation consideration.
