Following the presentation, the Arts Commission recommended allocations from the city’s 2025 RAP tax funds. The commission reported $45,011.40 available for distribution. Two applicants — Kayenta Arts Foundation and Tuacon (Tuacon Center for the Arts) — each requested amounts up to $20,000. After review, the commission recommended awarding $17,000 to Kayenta Arts Foundation and $17,000 to Tuacon, and placing the remaining $11,011.40 in reserve for city art projects.
During council discussion, a council member proposed adjusting the commission recommendation by reducing Tuacon’s award by $2,500 and increasing the amount reserved for city arts projects by the same sum, citing the Arts Commission’s ongoing project workload and limited fundraising capacity. The motion made on the council floor approved the Arts Commission’s recommendation with that $2,500 reallocation. Council recorded that Councilmember Smith had declared a conflict of interest earlier in the meeting and did not vote on this matter.
The adjusted award totals are therefore: Kayenta Arts Foundation — $17,000; Tuacon Center for the Arts — $14,500 (reduced by $2,500); Ivins City arts allocation/reserve — $13,511.40 (including the $11,011.40 previously held in reserve plus the $2,500 reallocated). The council motion passed by voice vote; the meeting record notes the absent/recused vote by Councilmember Smith.
Commissioners described priorities for the reserved funds as potential permanent or large-scale acquisitions in roundabouts and public spaces, artist features and continuation of the Art on Loan program. The Arts Commission said it has applied for a National Endowment for the Arts “Our Town” grant and expects a decision in April.
