Coronado National Forest plans prescribed burn in Ash Canyon; smoke likely visible across Cochise County

Michelle Perez, public information officer for the Coronado National Forest, told KWCD listeners that forest managers hope to conduct a prescribed burn in Ash Canyon next week to support the Huachuca fire-escape program.
"We've got a planned prescribed burn coming up hopefully next week depending on weather and conditions," Perez said. "We've got approximately 500 piles that we started on last year, about 50 acres."
Perez said crews will seek conditions that minimize smoke but warned that smoke will be visible in the county during and shortly after the burn. "We're going to try to minimize that as much as we can...but there will be smoke visible in the county," she said.
Forest staff are targeting Wednesday and Thursday for ignition with monitoring into Friday if conditions allow and will post updates on the Coronado National Forest Facebook page. Perez framed the burn as part of the broader Huachuca fire-escape effort intended to reduce wildfire risk through vegetation treatment.
Residents were urged to check the Coronado National Forest Facebook page before reporting fires to emergency dispatch, as managers said planned burns will be posted there.
