Crystal Jackson of the Atlanta Regional Commission told the council the voluntary Green Communities program recognizes local governments that implement measures to reduce environmental impact and practice sustainability. Jackson highlighted a subset of measures Canton used to earn credit: allowing extra parking for developments that use pervious pavement, adopting a sustainability plan with multiple focus areas, installing an 80‑kilowatt solar array on City Hall to offset building energy use, and installing 10 electric vehicle chargers for public use at the downtown parking deck.
Councilmembers thanked staff, especially Kelly Penley and Councilmember McGrew, who served as a liaison to the Sustainability Board. Mayor Grant accepted the recognition and invited the ARC presenter to bring forward the plaque.
The award is a certification of practices adopted to date; councilmembers said they look forward to pursuing higher certification levels in the future.
