Clovis staff to seek $5,000 New Mexico Grown allotment for senior meals

City staff told the Senior Services Committee they will seek commission approval to accept $5,000 from the Aging and Long Term Services Department’s New Mexico Grown program to buy local produce and meat for Hillcrest meals.
"I was approached by Aging Long Term Services Department and they have a program called New Mexico Grown. ... basically receive funding, of $5,000 to be able to put back into produce and meat," Miss Reagan said, adding the award requires spending 60% on produce and 40% on meat.
Reagan said local farms and vendors in Curry County would be used where possible; she specifically mentioned Foot Meats as a vendor for beef and pork. The award is a pilot for the city; staff must spend the funds by May 31 to qualify and can apply again in July for a larger allocation (Reagan said she expected approximately $10,000 for the following year).
Committee members asked how the purchases would reach seniors. Reagan said produce and meat can be used in daily congregate meals (for example, at a salad bar or in menu items such as fajitas), and some centers in the state distribute produce directly to seniors on market days.
The committee did not vote on acceptance during the discussion; Reagan said she would take the funding request to the commission for approval.
