UNICEF said it is providing urgently needed emergency relief supplies after an earthquake struck Dhingri County in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
The briefing reported that at least 126 people have died and 188 were injured. More than 30,000 people have been relocated to temporary settlements. In the two counties where UNICEF is providing support, more than 10,000 children below age seven are affected. UNICEF said it air-dropped 40 tonnes of supplies for newborns, young children and pregnant women — including diapers, warm clothing and quilts — and the first batch of supplies arrived the previous day.
UNICEF said it is also working with local partners to provide longer-term psychosocial support for affected children. The agency released the figures at the UN briefing and cited a request from local authorities for assistance.
Ending: UNICEF described follow-up support and psychosocial programs under development with local partners, noting the region’s cold nighttime temperatures as an added humanitarian concern for young children and pregnant women.
