Oak Ridge schools showcase student awards, Blue Ribbon celebration and Wildcat Manufacturing honor

Board members used the Nov. 18 meeting to highlight recent student achievements and school events across the district, from arts and science activities to individual student awards.
Glenwood Elementary reported that 45 students attended fall intersession where they explored careers such as zoology, banking and firefighting and ran an "intersession economy," staff said. Glenwood also celebrated a National Blue Ribbon award with a PTO-sponsored carnival on Oct. 24.
Willowbrook staff reported a large turnout at their annual fall festival, a first chili cook-off and a week of nuclear-science activities tied to local research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; the school also hosted a Veterans Day breakfast on Nov. 11.
Jefferson Middle School announced that 12 orchestra members earned seats in the 2024 East Tennessee SBOA Junior Clinic, with students placed across blue and red orchestra ensembles.
Robertsville students swept the middle-school visual arts category of the 2024 Mira Kimmelman "Learning from the Holocaust" contest sponsored by the Tennessee Holocaust Commission and the Kimmelman family; first place included a $500 cash prize.
At the Nov. 18 meeting the board also recognized Oak Ridge High senior Lily Shelton, who was nominated by the district for a Tennessee School Boards Association student-achievement award, won the East District honor and was subsequently named Tennessee Student of the Year. Shelton told the board she received a $2,000 scholarship from the School Boards Association and a $2,200 scholarship from Energy Solutions.
Separately, the board celebrated Wildcat Manufacturing — a year-long capstone student-run program offering design, manufacturing and automation services — which received a statewide excellence-in-education award, district officials said.
