Cedar City Council recognized multiple police officers with life-saving awards and introduced newly sworn officers during the meeting.
Chief (police) presented awards to Officer Ben Peterson (noted earlier as having used an automated external defibrillator to restore a pulse on Oct. 21, 2024) and to a group of officers — Corporal Condie, Officer Hatch, Officer Bowler, Officer Barrett, Officer McKern, and Officer White — who jointly performed life-saving measures after a December 7 accident on South Main Street. Chief's remarks said officers used AEDs, coached or performed CPR, removed the driver from a vehicle and provided respirations, actions the ER staff later credited with allowing the patient to reach the hospital alive.
Chief also introduced three officers recently sworn in: Officer Colby Kearns, Officer Trenton Price and Officer Nick Allred. Each briefly introduced themselves to the council and stated their reasons for joining the department.
Chief reported the department currently has five AEDs and said they are seeking to obtain more.
Why it matters: The awards recognize frontline emergency response by police officers who acted before EMS arrival; the introductions show staffing growth in the police department.
What’s next: Chief said the department will continue to seek AEDs and to provide public updates on officer staffing and recognition.
