Downingtown Area SD outlines full-day kindergarten plan emphasizing purposeful play and expanded recess

Elena Seigel, the district grade-level leader for kindergarten, and Chris Mills, a full-day kindergarten teacher, presented the Downingtown Area School District's plan to expand and standardize full-day kindergarten across the district, including a new purposeful play block, a second recess and a set of professional development and teacher supports.

The presentation outlined why purposeful play matters to early learning and how the district plans to reallocate minutes among curricular areas to add play, a second recess and an iDesign encore class while preserving core instructional time. Seigel said the play block will be child-led with teacher guidance and tied to standards, and gave examples such as dramatic play, manipulative play, outdoor play and sensory activities. Chris Mills described classroom logistics and a shared goal of consistent schedules across the district to allow common prep time and coordination of recesses.
