District previewing changes after Iowa Department of Education audit of special education services

Miss Winkels, director of special education services for the Clear Creek Amana Community School District, told the board on Jan. 15 that a team from the Iowa Department of Education conducted a site visit focused on post‑secondary and transition services and reviewed individualized education programs (IEPs) across the district.
The visit stemmed from two state complaints filed in 2023 and 2024. “They did mention that they did notice we have some IEP compliance issues and a lack of proper documentation, especially in our post‑secondary and transition services,” Miss Winkels said. She told trustees the district had not yet received the state’s final report but expected it in the coming days and that the department would later provide a decision about next steps and any required timelines.
