County mayor thanks firefighters deployed to California, announces State of the County, $250,000 for downtown affordable housing

Salt Lake County’s mayor on Jan. 14 reported that multiple county firefighters were among Utah personnel sent to assist in California wildfires, announced the county’s State of the County address and highlighted a county contribution to a downtown affordable housing project.
At the council meeting the mayor said eight Unified Fire Authority (UFA) firefighters, including an emergency management team member, Jed Ellis, were deployed to assist with a major California wildfire and might remain there two to three weeks or longer. “I wanna thank them, all of our county, agencies and departments who sent personnel,” the mayor said, while acknowledging the personal toll on families who must temporarily relocate for mutual-aid assignments.
The mayor announced the 2025 State of the County address will be held at Clark Planetarium at noon on Feb. 4. He said the county moved the event to midday so it does not conflict with evening legislative-session activities and family commitments.
The mayor also reported that the county contributed $250,000 from its home funding program to 144 South Apartments, a six-story development downtown that the mayor said will provide 110 affordable housing units. The contribution was described as part of the county’s effort to address deep housing needs and the broader housing crisis.
Other items noted by the mayor and council during the elected-officials reports included:
- Aging and adult services staff participating in a “cell phones for soldiers” phone-drive accepting donated phones Jan. 21–Feb. 28 at senior centers so donated phones can be converted into calling cards for military personnel.
- Announcement of ZAP’s 2025 Impact Collaborative Program to build capacity for ZAP Tier 2 grantees through networking and training.
- Calendar items announced by council members and staff, including an expungement summit at the Delta Center on Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 2–7 p.m., and a Clark Planetarium Legislative Night on Jan. 28 at 5 p.m.
The mayor added a personal note about family members evacuated during the California fire. He said his sister had been evacuated from Brentwood but that, at the time of his remarks, her house appeared likely to be okay. The mayor also noted that state officials and county staff had participated in related state events on aging and that county staff had been recognized for their contributions.
