West Chester Area School District committee approves minutes, new instructional materials and 2025-26 calendar

At a Jan. 14 meeting of the West Chester Area School District Teaching, Learning and Equity Committee, members voted unanimously to approve previously distributed minutes, adopt new core instructional materials for secondary German, Italian and health classes, and approve the proposed 2025-26 school calendar.

The committee first approved the Nov. 12, 2024 combined People Services and Education Committee minutes by a 4-0 vote. Director Parkinson, Dr. Ditry, Director Frey and Dr. Herman recorded “yes” votes.

The committee then voted 4-0 to accept the recommendation of its instructional materials review committee to adopt new world-language and health texts. Dr. Reynolds, presenting on behalf of Dr. Brown, said the German recommendation is a recently published text (2023) and that the Italian selection, while from a 2016 edition, was judged the most current available from that publisher. The health text presented is a newly published 2025 title. Dr. Ditry, who served on the review committee for German, said “Intercultural was by far the better fit” and that the recommendation reflected consensus among teachers, parents and administrators who reviewed the options.

Finally, the committee considered the proposed 2025-26 school calendar, presented as a first read. Dr. Reynolds reviewed key dates in the draft: a three-day professional development week beginning Aug. 18, 2025; the first student day on Monday, Aug. 25, 2025; built-in half days for teacher development and parent conferences; and the last half days of school on June 10–12, 2026, with snow-day contingencies noted. He also said graduation dates would appear on the district’s glossy calendar and listed June 2–4 as the sequence for the district’s three high schools. The committee voted 4-0 to approve the calendar as presented for first reading.
