Board approves vendor award for middle-school locker-room benches and adopts state budget amendment

At the Jan. 10 meeting, district staff asked the Hoke County Schools Board of Education to approve purchase and installation of eight phenolic locker-room benches and 12 interior doors for West Oak Middle School and to adopt State Budget Amendment No. 2 (Revision 61).
Facilities staff presented three vendor quotes for the locker-room benches and three for the interior doors. Staff said the benches’ specifications call for 72-by-12-inch phenolic benches suitable for moist environments and that the interior doors must meet applicable fire-safety codes, hardware and closures. Staff recommended awarding the bench work to the low bidder indicated in the packet and Bradford Hardware for the doors, with a total project cost listed in staff materials as $48,778.50 to be paid from the public school building renovation and repair fund.
Board members asked whether some vendors had prior experience installing interior doors for the district. Staff said Redford Hardware Company provided an updated quote and indicated they could supply and install doors to code, but that Redford had not previously done this work for the district. Board members also noted Westco’s quote was an outlier and discussed 7 Oaks Company as another bidder that does turnkey installation.
A motion to approve the procurement, following discussion, was made and seconded; the board voted to award the bench contract to 7 Oaks Company and to award the interior-doors contract to Bradford Hardware as presented. After the vote a board member said staff would “redo the paperwork immediately” to reflect the award.
On the budget item, the board approved State Budget Amendment No. 2 (Revision 61). District staff reported a net adjustment of $6,069.50 and an amended budget allotment of $77,055,182.72; the revision affected accounts including classroom teachers, noncontributory employee benefits, summer reading camps, international faculty exchange teachers, behavioral support, third-grade read-to-achieve teacher bonuses, principal and other teacher performance bonuses, CTE credentials, program support and literacy intervention.
