Pleasantville superintendent highlights family literacy programs, ESL classes and winter sports

Dr. Marilyn Martinez, superintendent of schools for the Pleasantville Public School District, told the board on Jan. 13 that the district has expanded family- and community-focused programs and celebrated recent student athletic successes.
"I'm happy to share with you some of the activities occurring in our district that we are very proud of," Martinez said, noting a senior-reader partnership with Saint Peter's Village and a December paint-and-pasta literacy night that drew more than 80 people. She said the district is partnering with program participants so seniors can "become readers to our younger students."
The superintendent described a range of parent-partnership activities, including an "employment cafe" that functioned as a mini job fair and a family English-as-a-Second-Language program intended to help caregivers support students' homework and school engagement. Martinez said the family ESL program provides training on how parents can help children at home.
Martinez also highlighted athletics and arts: the district's indoor track team competed in Toms River and in New York; the high school boys basketball team had three wins and "beat ACIT last Friday by 30 points," with Jamille Hudson scoring 27 points in that game. The superintendent said Isabella Alvarez won first place in a freedom games competition as a freshman. She also noted that several teams and students, including Chandeliz Reyes, Amina Mullins and Joel White, have led programs and that the middle school boys basketball team is 2–0.
On upcoming events, Martinez said the district will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 20 and announced a winter-wonderland family movie night scheduled for Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria; the movie will be Inside Out and registration information is posted online. Martinez closed her report by thanking staff, families and students for their participation.
No members of the public spoke during the meeting's public-comment period. The board voted to approve the superintendent's report as part of the consent/approval agenda.
