Board OKs new courses at Beloit Learning Academy: Electricity & Magnetism (Part A) and Forensic Science (Part B)

The Beloit School District board approved two new course proposals for the Beloit Learning Academy on Jan. 14, adding Electricity & Magnetism Part A and Forensic Science Part B to the academy's spring course offerings.
A director for career and technical education and alternative education presented the proposals with Principal Betsy Schroeder and Dr. Kelly Growerud (science) in attendance. Staff said the two courses are meant to align BLA science pathways more closely with Beloit Memorial High School and to expand students' career and technical options. Forensic Science Part B is an extension of an existing Part A course; staff said Part A is popular, typically drawing more than 20 students per term.
Presenters said the proposed courses would not add FTE and are intended to strengthen connections between science coursework and local career pathways such as power production/distribution and public‑safety/forensics. Board members asked about possible partnerships with Blackhawk Technical College and UW–Platteville; staff said those partnerships are possibilities to explore as course development continues.
The board approved a motion to add Electricity & Magnetism Part A and Forensic Science Part B beginning in spring 2025. Staff noted that some budget figures in the curriculum packet covered both Parts A and B where the course set is conceived as a two‑part sequence.
Ending: The additions were approved and will be scheduled at BLA for the current academic year’s next term.
