Queen Anne's County Commissioners on Jan. 14 voted to send an opposition letter to Annapolis regarding House Bill 101, legislation that would move the deadline for counties and municipal corporations to set property tax rates from July 1 to June 1.
Staff said the earlier deadline would "require us to accelerate our whole budget process by at least 30 days or more," and commissioners approved a motion to execute an opposition letter conveying that concern to state legislators. "We would, respectfully oppose that legislation because it will require us to accelerate our whole budget process by at least 30 days or more," a county official said during the desk-item discussion.
A motion to execute the opposition letter passed by voice vote. Commissioners noted hearings in Annapolis were upcoming and said the county wanted to register its concern that an earlier deadline would compress local budget work and timelines.
