Marion County Council elects leadership, hears administrative updates and appoints board candidates

The administrator reminded council to encourage constituents to subscribe to the county’s TextMyGov notifications and noted coordination efforts with the cities of Mullins and Marion.
Parks, facilities and investigations: Council members discussed parks signage and reservation processes; staff noted some park signs are worn and that St. James park has a reservation process. The animal shelter was reported to be over 50% complete, with remaining work on the front façade. Playground equipment for a site referred to in the transcript as “Elderly Beehives” (name as spoken in meeting) was reported as expected within one to two months. Council acknowledged an ongoing SLED investigation related to the chain of custody for monies transferred between departments; the administrator said that update would be provided in executive session.
Executive session: The council recessed into executive session for economic development, personnel and a contractual matter. The public record states no action was taken following that executive session.
Other business: Council approved meeting dates for the year, passed a resolution honoring former mayor Bobby L. Davis for Black History Month, and announced the Martin Luther King celebration and parade scheduled for Monday, Jan. 20 at 8 a.m., sponsored by Door of Hope and Marion County Long Term Recovery.
