PALO ALTO, Calif. — During a lengthy public comment period Monday, dozens of residents urged the City Council to take action on a range of community concerns, including traffic safety standards, shelter access, delayed park construction and allegations of retaliation in a middle‑school athletics program.
Pedestrian and bicycle safety drew the largest single block of testimony. Helen G., a local parent and advocate, presented slides and urged the council to ensure that intersection and roadway designs comply with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and state guidance, saying noncompliant designs create risks for bicyclists and pedestrians. She highlighted several intersections — including East Meadow & Ross and the Middlefield & San Antonio corridor — that she said did not meet MUTCD standards, and urged use of the state’s “daylighting” tools (painting curbs red near crosswalks) near school crosswalks to improve visibility.
