Upland honors Friends of the Library after nearly $20,000 adult literacy fundraising

The Upland City Council on Monday presented a certificate of recognition to the Friends of the Upland Library for raising nearly $20,000 to support the library’s adult literacy program.
The recognition covered fundraising carried out during Adult Literacy Awareness Week in November 2024. Council Member Breitling introduced the presentation and named key volunteers: Chester Olsen (president), Lynn Olsen (membership coordinator) and Jim Flock, a library board member.
“Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Upland community and a generous matching donation from a charitable donor, the Friends of the Upland Library were able to raise nearly $20,000,” Council Member Breitling said. The council said the funds will go directly to the library’s adult literacy program, which the presentation described as assisting community members to improve literacy skills.
Jim Flock, a library board member, told the council the volunteers’ service “would be impossible to overstate” and praised their longstanding community contributions.
No formal council action was required; the item was presented as a certificate of recognition during the meeting.
