Palo Alto council narrows parklet extensions, requires adjacent-tenant consent and grandfathers existing installations

PALO ALTO, Calif. — The City Council voted unanimously Monday to limit the expansion of parklets that extend beyond a business’s storefront and to grandfather existing installations.

Council members approved a package of retail committee recommendations that requires a signed letter of consent from the adjacent tenant before a parklet can extend beyond its own frontage. Existing parklets in good standing may continue under their current permits until the city reconstructs the downtown streetscape or until further council action. Staff may also issue one low-rise parklet application that had already completed plan review. If the neighboring storefront is vacant, applicants may proceed without tenant consent for the duration of a one-year permit; if a tenant later occupies the space, the tenant may object at renewal.
