Hartland board approves routine items; superintendent spotlights student newscast at Village Elementary

The superintendent introduced a presentation from Village Elementary staff on a student media project called Hedgehog Highlights. Morgan Youngs, Village Elementary’s STEM teacher, told the board the project is student initiated and hands-on. "They are obsessed with the hedgehog highlights," Youngs said. "It's all student led, student centered, student student created," she added, describing students writing scripts, filming, recording and editing their work.
Youngs said the work is project-based learning and described examples of student-produced segments, including a script and planning for a "treats for troops" segment. She said different grade levels participate on staggered schedules so students across grades can take part; Youngs said second-graders sometimes leave at noon while fourth-graders come in to work on the newscast.
Board members recorded a series of brief roll-call votes during the motions. The agenda was moved by Mrs. Coleman and supported by Mrs. Shaw; the consent agenda was moved by Mrs. Shaw and supported by Mrs. Coleman. In each vote the seven board members on the dais were recorded as voting yes.
