Superintendent reports PowerSchool data breach affected most South Carolina districts; district coordinating with state

Superintendent Dr. Anderson told the board that a PowerSchool data breach affected the majority of South Carolina school districts and that PowerSchool, in coordination with the State Department of Education, will contact impacted individuals directly.
Superintendent Dr. Anderson informed the Chesterfield County School District Board of Trustees on Jan. 13 that the PowerSchool data breach reported last week affected nearly all South Carolina school districts and that the district is coordinating with the state education department and PowerSchool on next steps.
Anderson said the state notified districts that data for current and former students and employees may have been compromised; examples of potentially exposed items include names, addresses, Social Security numbers and medical information, either individually or in combination. Anderson said the State Department of Education is working directly with PowerSchool and has insisted that PowerSchool contact affected individuals, rather than individual districts conducting outreach.
All but four of South Carolina—s 82 districts reported compromise in the incident, Anderson said. The district is monitoring developments and said it will keep the public informed as more information becomes available. No specific list of affected individuals or exact data elements for Chesterfield County were provided during the meeting.
