Hartland trustees discuss renewing road-patrol contract, seek data on local impact

Hughes told trustees the road-patrol contract is the last year of a three-year arrangement and that the contract expires in August 2025.
Board members pressed for data before agreeing to a renewal. One trustee asked whether the sheriff’s office tracks local calls, responses and measurable impact from the road-patrol deputies; the board requested concrete statistics to justify continued district support. Hughes said he had already asked township manager Mike Luce to convene district and township staff to gather the requested information.
Hughes also summarized current safety practices at district buildings, including visitor screening through the Raptor system and ongoing ALICE-based training. He credited on-campus resource officers — identified in meeting discussion as Deputy Chuff and Deputy King — and adult staff for contributing to building safety and said the district values the deputies’ daily presence.
No formal vote was taken on renewing the road-patrol contract at this meeting. Board direction to staff focused on obtaining data from the township and sheriff’s office so trustees can make an evidence-based decision about future support.
