Board awards contracts for team building and upgrades to '51' building under 2020 bond

Mrs. Coleman moved and Mrs. Shaw supported a motion to accept BP10F for the team building and BP11A for the 51 building. The board approved the contracts on a roll-call vote with every member present voting yes.
District staff and consultants described the 51 building work as broader than initially planned and said additional scope — including HVAC upgrades, ceiling work and lighting — was added so the district could extend the usable life of the building by roughly a decade. Staff told trustees the bond application listed approximately $600,000 for the 51 building in earlier documents; that figure represented the broader bond-app estimate for the facility at the time and included technology and roof work rather than the discrete bid package now before the board.
Trustees also discussed the team building. Staff said the project had been put out to bid several times in recent years and previously drew higher proposals in the $2.4 million range; the latest round of bids produced a lower number, with the recommended bidder submitting a bid near $1.8 million. Consultants said favorable market timing and strong competition helped lower bids: staff reported receiving 26 bids for the team building package. Carla of Barton Mallow said the district deliberately bundled the team building and 51 building bids to attract competitive bidders.
Board members asked about scope changes and community expectations. Superintendent Jason Hughes said the team building will occupy the grass area south of the football field known locally as the "playpen," and that the facility is intended to increase locker-room capacity for multiple sports.
The motion to award BP10F (team building) and BP11A (51 building) passed unanimously. Board members asked staff to continue communicating project timelines and to coordinate contractors so work can proceed on schedule.
