Talbot County education staff propose $8.7M FY26 budget increase driven by pay placeholders, new positions and benefits

Talbot County Public Schools staff presented the proposed fiscal year 2026 operating budget during a Jan. 13 work session at the Talbot County Education Center, saying the district’s requested budget would increase by about $8.6–$8.7 million year over year and that a formal vote on the budget is scheduled for the Feb. 19 board meeting.

The budget presentation, led in the meeting by the staff member who introduced the package as “Miss Jones (budget presenter),” said the largest drivers of the requested increase are a placeholder for an across‑the‑board staff compensation increase, new positions the district is proposing to add, and rising fixed charges such as health insurance and pension costs. Miss Jones said the board and public will receive a more detailed revenue breakout from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) next week and that “we will vote you will vote on this at the February 19th meeting.”

Why it matters: the request affects how much additional local funding the County Council may be asked to provide. Miss Jones told the board that until MSDE publishes official allocations the district cannot finalize how much of the increase would be met by state versus local revenue and that the County Council will be “very interested to know what that breakout is” because it determines local participation.
