Jackson County Department on Aging reports donations, VITA host‑site plans and 'Soups on for Seniors' fundraiser

Danielle, director of the Jackson County Department on Aging, updated the Board of Commissioners on community programs, donations and outreach. The department reported a $1,000 donation from the Fraternal Order of Eagles and noted that Friends of Jackson Seniors received a $1,500 anonymous donation to support programs.
The department said it will host the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program run by the Community Action Agency, providing two classrooms for appointments. The director said the targeted income threshold for VITA services is $67,000.
Danielle described the department’s "Soups on for Seniors" fundraiser scheduled for March 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. She said RW Mercer and Dillon Associates have already sponsored the event, eight restaurants have committed and the Friends of Jackson Seniors are assembling silent-auction items, including $2,250 in Kroger gift certificates donated for the auction. The auction raised nearly $4,000 last year, the director said.
The department estimated it received 68 referrals through the Friends of Jackson Seniors website in 2024, about six referrals per month, for services such as Meals on Wheels and home services. The director said the website is a local referral source and that staff occasionally direct callers who appear to be seeking services in a different state to the national Elder Care Locator.
Commissioners moved to receive the Department on Aging report; the motion carried by voice vote.
