Mr. Ayala, the commission's executive director, told commissioners the action covers three grants recommended for immediate funding and seven of eight scholarship applicants recommended for support. "This is the initial group," he said, adding that the commission will continue to consider additional applications submitted by Feb. 1 and that roughly 20 further grant applications remain under review.
The commission asked that staff assemble a volunteer review committee of board members, staff and community representatives to help evaluate the remaining applications and recommend candidates for future rounds. Director Lopez Taft asked whether recipients could present back to the commission after completing projects; Mr. Ayala said recipients have been told the board would like follow-up reports and some plan to show summary videos or presentations.
Public comment included a statement from Sean Kilcoyne, a producer who said he has applied and described his community program work on Access Sacramento. "I'm really hoping to continue to do it," Kilcoyne said, citing past local production and a recent award for his work.
A Metro Cable 14 promotional video describing the community grant program — which offers up to $50,000 for video projects and $2,500 in production scholarships — was shown to the commission during the discussion. Commissioners praised staff for outreach and asked staff to continue publicity through the commission's channels and partner outlets.
Director Pluckabaugh moved the resolution and Director Lopez Taft seconded. The motion passed.
The resolution approves the named awardees for grant and scholarship funding, authorizes the commission chair to sign standard (pro forma) agreements with recipients and formalizes the November 15, 2024 deadline as the official closing date for that application cycle, retroactive to the Nov. 1 date announced earlier.
