Human Relations Commission and staff seek volunteers, donations for Jan. 23 homeless point‑in‑time count

City staff requested volunteers and small-item donations to support Palo Alto's participation in the annual homeless point‑in‑time (PIT) count scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 23. Staff said volunteers are needed to work in teams from about 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and to encourage people experiencing homelessness to complete an app-based survey used for the count.
Staff noted there is a prerecorded online volunteer training (a live session is scheduled the Monday before the count) and that teams will be assigned to specific census tracts or known locations. Staff requested hygiene items and small gift cards that can be offered as incentives to encourage participation in the survey. They asked volunteers and groups to contact staff (Elena and Minka) to sign up or to provide donation details.
Staff also said some Stanford-affiliated volunteers and other community partners have already signed up and encouraged commissioners to spread the word to community groups and faith organizations to increase coverage. The city will operate a command center at City Hall on the morning of the count to coordinate teams and provide a staging location.
