Mayor Jerry Dyer and newly elected and returning members of the Fresno City Council were sworn into office on Jan. 9 during a ceremonial session at Fresno City Hall, and the council selected its leadership for 2025.
Dyer, who was sworn in with family members participating in the oath ceremony, thanked city staff and council colleagues and described public service as an honor. "It is truly an honor to be able to serve," Dyer said during his remarks, citing public safety, homelessness work and downtown investments as priorities for his administration.
Newly seated and re-seated council members who took oaths included Council Vice President Mike Kerbaci (District 2), Council Member Tyler Maxwell (District 4), and newly elected Council Member Nick Richardson (District 6). Richardson, who addressed the chamber after his oath, said the office is entrusted to him by residents and added, "This seat is yours," asking colleagues to hold him to campaign promises.
After the ceremonial swearing-in, the council voted on its internal leadership for the year. Council Vice President Mike Kerbaci was nominated and elected to serve as council president for 2025; Council Member Annalisa Perea moved to elect Kerbaci and nominated Council Member Annalisa Arias to serve as vice president. There were no objections, and the nominations passed by voice vote.
The council also conducted other organizational actions related to committee leadership and agency appointments during the session.
The swearing-in and leadership votes followed a program of ceremonial remarks and public acknowledgments that included recognition of outgoing officials and presentations honoring local school teams. The new leadership will preside over meetings and set procedural priorities for the year ahead.
Looking ahead, the council scheduled regular business, public hearings, and follow-up items during its first regular meeting period under the new leadership.
