St. Mary Parish School Board approves multiple motions including track change orders and pay increase for members

At its Jan. 9 meeting the Saint Mary Parish School Board voted to approve meeting minutes and consent items, adopt a meeting schedule, authorize advertising for a new purchasing agent position, approve change orders for track and field repairs at several high schools, canvass three special-tax renewals, and raise board member and president pay.
The Saint Mary Parish School Board voted on a series of administrative and capital items at its Jan. 9, 2025 regular meeting in the Evan Medine meeting room.
The board approved the minutes of the Dec. 12, 2024 regular meeting and adopted the consent agenda (items listed by staff) with the exception of the item setting the regular meeting date/time/place, which the board separately retained and reaffirmed as the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Evan Medine meeting room.
The board approved advertising the job description for a new purchasing agent position and voted to fund that hire for roughly 4½ months of the current fiscal year pending a later budget amendment.
On capital work, the board approved change orders tied to track and field surfacing and field-event repairs. The board approved a $145,679 change order for Franklin Senior High (maintenance district 1) and a $237,363 change order covering Burwick High School and Patterson High School (maintenance district 2). Board discussion noted the work is maintenance-district-funded and that the overlays are time-sensitive because of upcoming track season.
The board also adopted a resolution canvassing returns from special elections held Dec. 7, 2024, renewing three maintenance-district special taxes for 10 years through 2035; the administration reported vote totals for each district (see Actions below).
On compensation, the board approved an increase in compensation to $800 per month for board members and $900 per month for the board president. The motion required a two-thirds vote; the recorded roll-call produced nine yes votes and two no votes. Board members who said yes during the roll call included Miss Anselm, Miss Lasalle, Miss Black, Miss Brent, Miss Griffin, Mister Mancuso, Miss Jones, Miss Dennis, Miss Moore; Mister Parity voted no. (One “no” vote was recorded in the tally but not associated with a named roll-call response in the record.)

Ending: The board handled the business items in a single meeting rather than tabling them for committee review; several items will require follow-up in budget work and maintenance-district accounting.
