Clarkston council appoints Jared Peterson to fill vacant seat; Peterson sworn in

The Clarkston Town Council voted unanimously to appoint Jared Peterson to a vacant council seat and administered the oath at its Jan. 7, 2025 meeting.
Peterson introduced himself to the council and said he applied because he "felt like nobody else was trying to help out," and that he had time in the winter to serve. He told the council he farms and that summer commitments such as haying and calving could sometimes prevent him from attending meetings.
Mayor Kelly and other council members told Peterson an appointed member serves only until the next election and would need to file in June if he wishes to run for a full term. The mayor said appointed council members receive materials from the Utah League of Cities and Towns and a copy of the town's municipal code.
After brief questions from council members, Council member Stevenson moved to appoint Peterson; Council member Kelly seconded the motion. A roll-call vote was recorded as unanimous in favor and the council immediately conducted a swearing-in. Peterson recited the oath: "I, Jared Peterson, do solemnly swear that I will support, obey and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State...and that I will discharge the duties of my office with fidelity."
The council also assigned Peterson responsibilities in the council's 2025 responsibility matrix: roads; parks; sports and recreation; floats and parades; and the Pony Express race and related logistics. The mayor said the assignment is intended to distribute event and program workload across council members and that the council member serving as Pony Express chair (McCall Stevenson) would remain the chair while Peterson would handle logistics and float coordination.
Ending: Council members welcomed Peterson and told him staff would provide training materials and a copy of the municipal code. The mayor reiterated that the appointment covers the remainder of the term until the next election cycle and encouraged Peterson to decide whether to file in June.
