The United Nations welcomed the formation of a new government in Lebanon under Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and said it looks forward to working closely with the government on priorities including consolidation of the cessation of hostilities and implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions, the UN spokesperson said.
The spokesperson reiterated the UN’s commitment to Lebanon’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence, referencing the Taif Accords and the Baabda Declaration and calling for effective implementation of Security Council resolutions 1701 and 1559. He noted that the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reaffirmed its support for the Lebanese Armed Forces as they redeploy in southern Lebanon and for government efforts to extend state authority and help returning residents rebuild.
On the humanitarian front, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said the situation remains precarious with ongoing operations, displacement and damage to critical infrastructure; the spokesperson cited displacement estimates and said the UN and partners continue to provide shelter, health, food, hygiene and winter assistance while flagging protection risks in heavily impacted return areas.
