Officials gave commissioners an update Feb. 12 on multiple active construction projects at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, including the upcoming West Garage groundbreaking, work on the Westgate expansion, and progress on a West Infill project.
Lynn Estabrook briefed the commission that the West Garage project will hold a groundbreaking event on Feb. 28 and that Lot B is closed so contractor mobilization and site preparation can begin in March. The garage will be constructed in two phases—south and north—with the south phase expected to open first to expedite demolition of the existing red garage. Staff said the contractor plans outreach to subcontractors (a March 11 date was under consideration) as they finalize a guaranteed maximum price.
Estabrook said the Westgate expansion has advanced to steel and framing work and glazing is planned to begin in March if weather allows. The West Infill project has started interior framing and siding installation, and delivery of mechanical and large electrical equipment has commenced; crews deployed a small crane to support those deliveries.
Commissioners asked about timelines and whether the projects will be completed in time for major events. Estabrook said the projects are moving quickly and that parts of the program are expected in the first quarter of 2026, but staff will consider event timing (for example, operational adjustments around March events) when scheduling commissioning and openings.
Staff said they will provide additional renderings and a site diagram showing north/south phases for the new garage at or shortly after the groundbreaking to help commissioners track the phased work.
